Julia Poock and Päivi Pätsi, ISEAS Symposium
When Katja told us that we were going to work with disabled people for two days, Julia was sceptical; What can they do, how does she deal with them and can they understand her? She comes from Germany and she can`t speak Finnish. These concerns were instantly scattered. We did not need words or a language. The atmosphere was warm and natural. We cleared everything with our hands, even our proposal to tinker instruments and mobile. Päivi has worked in different institutions with art. She wondered if the project would be any different from what she does every
day. That concern was also scattered. Having an art exhibition and an open house day with the people from ETEVA made it really special. We were doing art as equals.
Painting was important – that was clearly said to us. It was not what we had planned before hand. It made the project their own. And so are colourful wind chimes were created by people who can charm. It was a touching experience, and we are happy about the time at ETEVA.

Kun Katja kertoi, että työskentelisimme kehitysvammaisten kanssa kaksi päivää, Julia oli skeptinen: mitä he osaavat tehdä, kuinka toimimme heidän kanssaan ja kuinka he ymmärtäisivät meitä? Julia tulee Saksasta eikä puhu suomea. Epäilykset kaikkosivat välittömästi. Emme tarvinneet kommunikointiin sanoja tai kieltä. Ilmapiiri oli lämmin ja välitön. Selvitimme kaiken käsin, jopa ehdotuksemme tuulikelloista ja muista soittimista. Päivi on työskennellyt erilaissa paikoissa ohjaten taidetoimintaa. Hän mietti, poikkeaisiko projekti mitenkään hänen jokapäiväisestä työstään. Tämäkin epäilys oli turha. Taidenäyttelyn ja avointen ovien järjestäminen yhdessä etevalaisten kanssa teki kaikesta erityistä. Teimme taidetta tasa-arvoisesti. Maalaaminen oli tärkeää – se kerrottiin meille selvästi. Emme olleet suunnitelleet maalaamista, joten se maalaaminen teki projektista heidän omansa. Niin värikkäät ja tuulikellot ja soittimet syntyivät ihmisten kanssa, jotka osasivat hurmata. Se oli liikuttava kokemus ja olemme onnellisia ajastamme ETEVA talossa.

Julia ställde sig skeptiskt till att Katja berättade att vi skulle jobba under två dagar med handikappade människor. Vad kan de göra, hur förhåller hon sig till dem och kan de förstå henne? Hon kommer från Tyskland och förstår inte finska. Alla dessa inställningar visade sig vara totalt onödiga. Vi behövde varken ord eller ett språk. Stämningen var varm och det kändes naturligt. Vi förklarade allt med hjälp av våra händer, till och med förslaget om att skap instrument och göra en mobile. Päivi har jobbar med konst på olika institutioner. Hon undrade om projektet skulle skilja sig alls från det hon jobbar med till vardags. Också det visade sig vara en onödig farhåga. Arrangerande av en konstutställning och öppet hus tillsammans med människorna från ETEVA var riktigt speciellt. Vi gör konst som sambördiga. Målning var viktigt – det gjordes klart för oss, fast det inte var något som vi planerat på förhand. Det gjorde projektet till deras
eget. Så skapades färggranna mobilen och instrument tillsammans med människor som verkligen kan charma. Det var en rörande upplevelse och vi är lyckliga över våra stunder i ETEVA-huset.
Julia Poock, Germany – visual arts
I was born in Mexico City many years ago. My parents migrated from Germany to Mexico, and so I lived there for 10 years. I have beautiful memories of my childhood and I think it is possible to share my lucky experiences with other people. I love to be creative – not only on a paper, but also in my daily life life and at my job. For the symposium in Finland I would like to combine the nature and music. My idea is to make musical instruments with wood, stones, and other products of nature, and to walk in a park and to listen the music made by wood, wind, and water.
Päivi Pätsi – visual arts
Whether Pätsi is the consumer or the creator of the art is irrelevant; for her, art is about communication. In her work, Pätsi likes to explore the possibilities for expression enabled by various techniques; each tool conveys the message in their own unique way. Pätsi’s all-time favourite technique must be the aquarelles, a technique which she learned with Petri Hytönen and Senja Vellonen in the Helsinki University of Art and Design. Pätsi’s fascination to aquarelles arises from the serendipitous nature of the wet paint when it touches paper creating unexpected nuances in her paintings. The aquarelles are, in a way, uncontrollable, much like life itself.
Pätsi transformed everyday life into a series of fairytale like aquarelles for her exhibition “Playtime and Fairytales” in 2006. The exhibition also featured large-scale colouring in pictures allowing the public to contribute in her display.
In her final thesis, Pätsi’s collection of art aimed to explore how the inexplicable could be approached and interpreted through the tools of visual arts. Pätsi’s project was based on a mathematical analysis by Pätsi’s friend Maria Pusa, and in her thesis Pätsi found artistic ways to express the mathematical formulas through drawings and photographs. The process created unique pieces of work demonstrating the multitude of ways to deliver information. Science expresses knowledge in an accurate manner while art allows for more interpretation.
Pätsi has held two exhibitions with her daughter Unna Harkio, “Toddling together” and “The Shared World of a Mother and a Daughter”. Pätsi’s chosen materials for the exhibitions, gouache and acrylic paint, fascinated her daughter who was new to the techniques. The unique distinction of the two joint exhibitions lies in the equal communication of the two very different artists’ through their work.
Pätsi values her work as art teacher as much as she values painting itself. Pätsi’s strength as a teacher stems from the deeper understanding of the messages her students aim to express through their work. Pätsi considers community art projects as the truest form of art as they merge the process of creation with the interaction of the experience.
Eteva
ETEVA municipal union is a Finnish provider of disability services. 47 southern Finland municipalities are the owners. A total of about 1.3 million people live in their area. Eteva provides services annually to around 1,600 people with disabilities and mentally handicapped people. In addition, services are provided to mental health and other people with special needs.
Eteva offers individually designed, versatile work and day activities for people with disabilities and others who need special support.
The aim is the customer’s ability to function and employ.
It supports individual growth and development as well as independent life.
Implement an individual-centered approach with strong professional skills, providing opportunities for continuous learning through various job assignments and activities.
Craving to organize work and day activities at Eteva’s Activity Centers, local businesses and communities, as well as moving daytime activities.
Implement services in co-operation with the customer, his / her relatives and with various partners.
Action includes
Work on life skills, creative work, sport activities, work for businesses, production of own products, preparation for work, open and supported work and participation in society.
Eteva’s action is based on individual-centered life planning. The YKS method has been developed as a tool for guidance and human life planning. It can identify important things for a person and bring those who need support.

In work, art is visible;
We do handicrafts, carpet weaving, felting, crafts, drawing, painting, sewing, woodwork, repairs, gardening, trips to art exhibitions, etc.
Customers have been a ceramic course, a screening course, a light painting course, a wooden workout course and a music group.
Participation in this project is a great pleasure for customers and they look forward to the project’s start.
ETEVAN PÄIVÄAIKAINEN TOIMINTA RAASEPORISSA
Eteva kuntayhtymä on suomalainen vammaispalvelujen tuottaja. Etevan omistajia ovat 47 Etelä-Suomen kuntaa. Niiden alueella asuu yhteensä n.1,3 miljoonaa ihmistä. Eteva tuottaa palveluja vuosittain n.1600 vammaiselle ja kehitysvammaiselle henkilölle. Lisäksi palveluja järjestetään mielenterveyskuntoutujille ja muille erityistä tukea tarvitseville henkilölle.

Toteuttaa yksilökeskeiseen suunnitelmaan perustuvaa toimintaa vahvalla ammattitaidolla, tarjoamalla jatkuvan oppimisen mahdollisuuksia erilaisten työtehtävien ja toiminnan kautta.
Eteva järjestää työ- ja päivätoimintaa Etevan toimintakeskuksissa, paikallisissa yrityksissä ja yhteisöissä sekä liikkuvana päivätoimintana.
Toteuttaa palvelut yhteistyössä asiakkaan, hänen omaistensa sekä eri yhteistyötahojen kanssa.
Toiminta sisältää
Arjen elämäntaitojen harjoittelua, luovaa tekemistä, liikunnallista toimintaa, työn tekemistä yrityksille, omien tuotteiden valmistusta, työelämään valmentamista, Avo- ja tuettua työtä sekä osallistumista yhteiskuntaan.
Etevan toiminta perustuu yksilökeskeiseen elämänsuunnitteluun. YKS-menetelmä on kehitetty palveluohjauksen välineeksi ja ihmisen elämän suunnittelun tueksi. Sillä voidaan kartoittaa henkilölle tärkeitä asioita ja tuoda tukea tarvitsevan henkilön ääni kuuluville.
