The black and white time is over
Finland is a small country. Most of our art and culture is found in small cities at the grassroots level and stems from a pure love for art, whether for dance, theater or galleries. That is what we do.
There are two galleries in the Raasepori Photo Center in Karis, Zebra and Kobra, which are both non-profit cultural environments that cannot function without a grant system and endless generous volunteers.
This jubileee year, Finland is 100 years old and our center is 25. We are all grown up, but our activity is not stagnant or stalled and the center is ever evolving and changing. With the fierce passion of art, our photographic center has transformed and is paving the way for new talents.
Photo art has been a constantly changing phenomenon. Nowadays, photography is seen as equal to other types of contemporary art and is a clear everyday tool for many artists. The camera is a pocket-sized device that lets you easily and cheaply publish every moment of the world.
When assembling a show calendar, we feature cartoon art, performance art, installations, traditional scenes, reportage, and video art. We have organized panel discussions and workshops, we are involved in the refugee centers of the photo center, and we incorporate social art as a genuine part of our operations. You name it, we do it!
As a well-established bilingual photographic center in western Uusimaa, there is no doubt that some of the most traditional, puritan audience members may object to our changing, modern exhibition activity. We have heard that our exhibitions are not art, and that the works are ugly or are not even part of the photo genre.
We disagree; For us as a photo center, it is enough for the exhibitions to have a photograph in one form or another – either moving or tumbling, reflecting or scrubbing. We think our gallery has been created to serve everyone.
The purpose of art is not to please people, nor is it to shock people, though it can do both of these things. The task of art involves touching, opening up new ways of thinking, and expanding the horizon of thought. According to Christian Boltanskin, a French artist, the mission of art is to awaken hope and questions.
All art is not for everyone, and all art is for everybody – and that is why our event calendar is wide and versatile. We serve people, we are for society.
For us, today’s exhibition center of the Photographic Center is multi-faceted and colored – the black and white time is over!

Mustavalkoinen aika on päättynyt
Suomi on pieni maa. Suurin osa meidän taiteestamme ja kulttuuristamme tehdään pienissä kaupungeissa ruohonjuuritasolla ja puhtaasta rakkaudesta taiteeseen, oli sitten kyse tanssista, teatterista tai galleriatoiminnasta. Näin meilläkin.
Karjaalla sijaitsevat kaksi Raaseporin valokuvakeskuksen galleriaa Zebra ja Kobra ovat kumpikin voittoa tavoittelemattomia kulttuuritiloja, jotka eivät voisi toimia ilman apurahajärjestelmää eivätkä ilman loputonta talkoohenkeä.
Suomen 100-vuotisjuhlavuotena olemme 25-vuotiaita. Siis jo aikuiseen ikään päässeitä gallerioita. Toimintamme ei kuitenkaan ole jämähtänyttä eikä pysähtynyttä, vaan olemme taiteen palavalla intohimolla muuntaneet valokuvakeskuksemme suuntaa ja kurssia uusille laineille.

Valokuva taidemuotona on ollut jatkuvasti muuttuva ilmiö. Nykyään valokuva on tasavertainen nykytaiteen muiden lajien kanssa ja myös selkeä jokapäiväinen työkalu monen monelle taiteilijalle. Valokuva on jokaisen taskussa kulkeva laite, jolla kuvan voi helposti ja halvalla julkaista sekunnissa ympäri maailman.
Näyttelykalenteria kootessamme meillä ovat esille päässeet niin sarjakuvataide, performanssitaide, installaatiot, perinteinen pimiökuva, reportaasit kuin videotaide. Olemme järjestäneet paneelikeskusteluita ja kaikille avoimia työpajoja, vieneet valokuvakeskuksen pakolaiskeskuksiin, ja tuoneet sosiaalisen taiteen aidosti osaksi keskuksemme toimintaa. Ei epäilystäkään, etteikö muuttunut näyttelytoimintamme ole aiheuttanut närää kaikkein puritanistisimpien valokuvataiteen ystävien keskuudessa. Olemmehan me etabloitunut kaksikielinen valokuvakeskus läntisellä Uudellamaalla. Olemme kuulleet, että näyttelymme eivät ole taidetta, teokset ovat rumia tai eivät kuulu valokuvan genreen.
Galleriamme on luotu palvelemaan kaikkia.
Olemme eri mieltä; meille valokuvakeskuksena riittää, että näyttelyissä on tavalla tai toisella läsnä kuva – joko liikkuvana tai stillinä, heijasteena tai harsolle painettuna. Ajattelemme, että galleriamme on luotu palvelemaan kaikkia.
Taiteen tehtävä ei ole miellyttää, eikä shokeerata, vaikka se voikin tehdä näitä molempia. Taiteen tehtävä on koskettaa, avata uusia ajattelureittejä ja laajentaa ajattelun horisonttia. Ranskalaisen taiteilijan Christian Boltanskin mukaan taiteen tehtävä on herättää toivoa ja esittää kysymyksiä.
Kaikki taide ei ole kaikkia varten ja kaikki taide on kaikkia varten – ja juuri sen vuoksi meidän näyttelykalenterimme on leveä ja monipuolinen. Me palvelemme ihmisiä, me olemme yhteiskuntaa varten.
Meille valokuvakeskuksena nykypäivän näyttelymme esiintyvät siis monen näköisin ja värisin kasvoin – mustavalkoinen aika on päättynyt!
